Do I have a fax modem, or do I need to buy one?
All Apple Internal Modems are fax modems. If your Mac came with an internal modem, you've got a fax modem.
How do I use Page Sender with my broadband (cable) / DSL Internet connection?
Faxing ultimately requires a voice phone line. Page Sender can use your Apple Internal Modem (or an external modem) to connect to a voice phone line directly. Page Sender can also serve as a client for several fax-via-Email services (efax.com, jConnect, MaxEmail, EasyLink) which maintain the phone line and modem for you (and charge you a fee for that service). Since faxing occurs over a voice phone line, it has nothing to do with DSL or cable modems. You can fax using a voice line which is also running DSL, just as you can make voice phone calls with the same line (be sure to install your DSL filters). One advantage to the fax-via-Email services is that you can avoid tying up your voice line if you have a DSL or Cable modem as your Internet connection because your E-mail will be sent via your DSL or Cable modem, but again you pay for the privilege.
How do I share my fax line with a telephone or answering machine?
Differentiating incoming calls is a hardware function. Some fax machines can differentiate voice and fax calls. They do this by answering all calls immediately. They then provide their own electronic ring sound (and continue to ring the attached telephone) to reassure voice callers while "listening" for fax calling tones. If they detect a fax calling tone, they answer. Otherwise they continues to ring. For good measure, they pick up with a fax answer tone after many rings in case the incoming fax machine isn't sending calling tones. Some modems also do this. To the best of our knowledge, Apple Internal Modems do not.
Boxes which provide just the fax detection function then "ring through" to either the fax machine or phone depending on the type of call are available at places such as Radio Shack in the US and may be available in your area. Combine this hardware solution with your computer (running Page Sender) hooked up to the "fax" output of the box and your answering machine hooked up to the "voice" output of the box.
Why does Page Sender always dial a 1 before the fax number?
Page Sender comes configured for 1 + ten digit dialing, and expects you to include the area code in the A/C & Number column of the fax envelope. Several other dialing configurations are supported - see the dialing preferences help. To take full advantage of Smart Dialing, you should enter phone numbers in your address book in the format +[country code]-[area code]-[number] (for example: +1-408-884-2320). The country code for the US is 1.
How do I send a quick fax (cover page only)?
Select Print from the File menu of any Mac OS X application. Select Page Sender from the Printers list. Set the Pages from: 0 to: 0 and fill in the address list and cover page information. When you press Print, you'll see feedback that your entire document is printing, but Page Sender will only send the cover page.
How do I set up (or change) my fax service?
To set up your fax service, choose Page Sender Setup from the Send via popup. This will launch Page Sender Fax Center and take you directly to the fax preferences. Page Sender supports sending faxes via fax modem, eFax.com, jConnect (formerly jFax), and EasyLink (formerly faxSav).
How do I get Page Sender to generate "calling tones" for combination fax/answering devices?
Please do the following:
1. Launch Page Sender Fax Center (in Applications)
2. Select Preferences from the Page Sender Fax Center menu
3. Press the Dialing button in the toolbar of the Preferences window
4. Change your Dialing Prefix to T^
Notes:
• The second character in step 4 is a caret, formed by pressing shift-6 on a US keyboard
• The caret instructs your modem to send "calling tones" when making a fax call
• Newer Apple Internal Modems do not play the "calling tones" through the computer speaker, but all Apple Internal Modems generate the "calling tones" on the line
How can I watch the progress of my fax?
If you're faxing via modem, an application called Page Sender Fax Center is opened (in the background) and shows information about your fax. Click on the Page Sender airplane icon in the dock to see. If you're faxing using eFax.com, jConnect, or EasyLink, these faxes are sent via your E-mail client and the services will E-mail acknowledgements and/or errors to you.
How do I set my default country code?
Choose Page Sender Setup from the Send via popup. This will launch Page Sender Fax Center and take you directly to the fax preferences. Click Dialing in the toolbar. Change the Country Code to whatever you'd like.
How can I dial without a dialtone (for example, from behind a PBX)?
Choose Page Sender Setup from the Send via popup. This will launch Page Sender Fax Center and take you directly to the fax preferences. Click Modem in the toolbar. Add X3 at the end of the Modem Initialization: -iZ -i&FE&D2S7=120 -i&C0X3. If you would also like your fax modem to ignore busy signals (sometimes the PBX or voicemail dialtone sounds like busy to the modem), use X1 in place of X3.
Can I use my own cover page template for faxes sent via fax modem?

Why can't I send via eFax.com, jConnect, and/or EasyLink?

It says "An unexpected error has occurred. -108" when setting up Page Sender. What should I do?
Follow Apple's instructions for dealing with this problem. Users who've followed these instructions are able to use Page Sender.
I'm having trouble entering my registration information. Any suggestions?
Sometimes the Enter Serial Number window gets hidden behind your application's window. Move that window out of the way then click where it says Enter Serial Number. Enter the Name and Serial # exactly as they appear on your receipt. (For example, if you're "Jane Doe", don't use "jane doe".) Be sure there are no extra characters before or after your name or serial number.
How do I get rid of the "Please purchase" dialog, tag line, and PDF watermark?
That's easy. When you see the Please purchase dialog, click the Purchase button and follow the eSellerate purchase process. You may also choose Purchase / Register from the Send via popup to get started.
How do I reinstall Page Sender?
The demo version of Page Sender is identical to the registered version. You should not use the eSellerate reinstall process (we're working with eSellerate to remove that text from the receipt). Simply press the Demo button when doing your install. If you're installing on a new or different system and need your serial number, see the previous question.
How do I make my printer (rather than Page Sender) the default?
From the print dialog, select Edit printer list... from the Printer: menu. Select your printer from the Printer List by clicking its name. Select Make Default from the Printers menu. Quit Print Center. Now your printer is the default. If you want to use Page Sender, simply choose it from the Printer: menu.
Why can't I use Page Sender from Classic applications or while running Mac OS 9?
Page Sender takes advantage of Mac OS X's printing system, which is not available to Classic applications. For a PDF printing solution for Classic applications and/or Mac OS 9 and earlier, check out PrintToPDF from James Walker available at this web site.
Why does my address book application launch when I print with Page Sender?
Page Sender uses Apple Events to support live address lookups. These lookups require that your address book application be running.
Why can't I use live addressing when printing from Entourage?
If Entourage is your address book, you cannot use live addressing when printing from Entourage because the Entourage program cannot display the print dialog and process address lookups at the same time.
Why can't I drag groups from the PowerMail application?
Unfortunately, the PowerMail application does not include any data when you drag a group, so there's nothing to add. SmileOnMyMac has filed a bug with CTM Development on this issue, and they've indicated that they may fix this in a future release.
When I click the "Open Address Book" button using Eudora for Mac OS X, why doesn't the Eudora Address Book window appear?
There is a bug in Eudora for Mac OS X's AppleScript support. SmileOnMyMac has advised Eudora Technical Support of this bug, and we hope they will fix it soon. For now, leave the Eudora Address Book open when you quit Eudora.
When I click the "Open Address Book" button using PowerMail, why doesn't the PowerMail Address Book window appear?
PowerMail does not support opening its Address Book window via AppleScript. SmileOnMyMac has advised CTM Development of this, and they've indicated that they may add this in a future release. For now, leave the PowerMail Address Book open when you quit PowerMail.
When I click the "Open Address Book" button using Palm Desktop, why doesn't the Palm Desktop Contact List window appear?
Palm Desktop does not support opening its Contact List window via AppleScript. SmileOnMyMac has advised Palm of this, and we hope they will fix it soon. For now, leave the Contact List window open when you quit Palm Desktop.
In Claris E-mailer, how do I get rid of the "Send Now" Setup dialog when I try to send without editing first?
Open Claris Emailer. From the Setup menu, select Preferences.... Under Category, select Outgoing messages. Under the heading When clicking the Send Now button, uncheck the box next to Prompt for connection information. Press OK to save your change. Now your mail will be sent directly when you're not editing first - no more confirmation dialog.

When I try to print from Acrobat Reader, why is the output ugly (bitmapped) and is there anything I can do?
This appears to be a problem with Acrobat Reader and/or the Mac OS printing system. If you want to print PDF files, use the Preview application found in your Applications folder.
When I try to print from iPhoto, I don't see the Page Sender envelope - what should I do?
To use Page Sender from iPhoto, press the Advanced Options button and this will open the Page Sender envelope.
When I try to print from Adobe InDesign, I don't see the Page Sender envelope - what should I do?
To use Page Sender from Adobe InDesign, press the Printer... button (and dismiss the warning dialog if it appears) and this will open the Page Sender envelope.
Where are Page Sender's AppleScripts stored?
Page Sender's AppleScripts are stored in /Library/Printers/PageSender/Scripts. There are two types of scripts - one for Address Books and one for E-mail Clients. You can add support for additional E-mail clients by writing additional scripts using the existing scripts as a template. If you would like to contribute your scripts to SmileOnMyMac, send them to us.
